Nivarox (metal alloy)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nivarox ( Ni CHT var iabel ox ydfest) is a to 1933 of Reinhard Straumann developed metal alloy . This resulted in tension springs and, like the similar Nivaflex , spiral springs. Nivarox is mainly used in the watch industry . The alloy of nickel , chromium , manganese , titanium , beryllium , silicon and iron has properties that are advantageous in the manufacture of balance springs and drive springs . Nivarox springs are fatigue-free, almost anti-magnetic, rustproof and have a very low coefficient of thermal expansion .

The Nivarox -Rezeptur Straumann consists by weight of: 39% nickel, 8% chromium, 1% manganese, 1% titanium, <1% beryllium and 0.5% silicon, the balance being iron. Today's composition of Nivarox (and Nivaflex ) consists of 40-45% cobalt , 21-27% nickel, 12-18% chromium, 4% molybdenum , 4% tungsten , 0.3% beryllium, <0.1% carbon , the rest of iron.

Nivarox makes the rate behavior of mechanical watches stable and almost temperature-neutral. Thanks to these special properties, the complex and expensive compensation balance could be replaced. Today, balance springs made of Nivarox are used worldwide by almost all manufacturers of mechanical watches in various quality levels. The improvement of the material is continuously being developed.
