Nkandla is a city in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal . It is located in the municipality of the same name in the district of King Cetshwayo and is located in the middle of the old Kingdom of Zululand .

In 2011 Nkandla had 3,557 inhabitants. Over 90 percent of the population are unemployed, which means that poverty is widespread here. The HIV infection rate is very high in the region. One in four or even one in three is affected. There are many orphans because of the high death rate from AIDS , which also affected many middle-aged parents. The documentary film Orphans of Nkandla ('The Orphans of Nkandla') by BBC and Truevision describes the difficult living conditions of these orphans in the community.

Nkandla is the birthplace of the South African President and former Chairman of the African National Congress Jacob Zuma , who served from 2009 to 2018 .
