action

Delhi 1999: Jessica Lall is a model and works that night with Vikram Jai Singh behind the bar in a discotheque. They close the bar and three young men appear. Manish Bhardwaj, son of an influential politician, and his friends want to buy drinks. When Jessica refuses to sell them drinks because the bar has already closed, Manish pulls out a gun and shoots her in the head. The men flee and Jessica is taken to the hospital, where she dies shortly afterwards. The witnesses are intimidated by Manish's father and the investigation is obstructed. Jessica's sister Sabrina doesn't put up with that. She wants to put the culprit behind bars. Successful NDTV journalist Meera Gaity, known for pushing boundaries, is not interested in the case for now, but cannot watch injustice reign and decides to get to the bottom of it. Meera tries to persuade the witnesses to tell the truth about what happened that evening. Vikram, who watched Jessica get shot, refuses to speak because he was threatened with a bullet if he spoke. So the other witnesses are also silenced. Manish hides in his father's house and as soon as he leaves the house he is arrested.

Sabrina talks on TV that Jessica could have been someone else's daughter too. Citizens are starting a campaign, not just for Jessica, but also for a more just system. After all the grief and suffering, Sabrina's parents also die. Sabrina thinks she wasted six years of her life. Meera gives her strength and tells her that she doesn't just do it for herself, but for a whole people. The Prime Minister and Prime Minister are also participating in the campaign. Outside there are people with raised candles to show Sabrina that she is getting support. Manish is sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Jessica Lall.

Reviews

“[…] In short: The film is a bit satisfied with itself. To stay in journalist jargon: He doesn't follow up, he doesn't dig deep. He scratches the surface solidly, competently tells what we already know, and packs everything into an appearance suitable for the masses with clean staging, pleasing songs and confident actors who distract from the slight excess length. Everything is good and right, everything is exemplary, everything is pleasing. A film that you can't really be angry with. Neither am I, because he's good. But it could have been a lot better.
