Noah Haynes Swayne (born December 7, 1804 in Culpeper County , Virginia (according to other information: Frederick County , Virginia), † June 8, 1884 in New York City ) was an American lawyer and politician of the Democratic Party and the Republican Party and the first Republican who as a judge at the Supreme Court of the United States was appointed (US Supreme Court).

Life

After attending school he studied law and was admitted to the bar in Virginia in 1823 and as a lawyer in Ohio in 1824 . In 1825 he became a prosecutor in Coshocton County and held this office until he was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives for the first time in 1829 as a supporter of the Andrew Jackson- led Democrats (Jacksonian Democrats) .

In 1830, he was appointed federal attorney for the Ohio district by US President Jackson to succeed Samuel Herrick . In addition, he continued his political career and was initially 1834 to 1836 member of the City Council of Columbus before he was 1836 again elected a member of the House of Representatives of Ohio. Through his work as a federal attorney, he maintained a personal friendship with John McLean , a judge on the US Supreme Court, and through his influence joined the Republican Party after it was founded in 1854.

In 1861 he was appointed as the first republican to be an associate judge at the US Supreme Court by US President Abraham Lincoln and officially took office on January 27, 1862. During his membership in the US Supreme Court, he worked on, among other things, the important decisions on the Texas v. White 1869 and Strauder v. West Virginia 1880 with.

He held the office of Associate Justice until his resignation on January 24, 1881, where he twice unsuccessfully applied for the office of Chief Justice of the United States in 1864 and 1873 . After his death he was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Washington, DC .

His son Wager Swayne was Brigadier General of the US Army during the Civil War and Governor of Alabama for some time .
