Noah Kalina (born July 4, 1980 ) is an American photographer .

Kalina grew up in Centerport, New York and attended Harborfields High School. He currently lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn .

Works

In his work, Kalina often deals with portraits and people photography, but also with new perspectives on everyday places and events, for example in his photo series Labs At Night for SEED Magazine . His pictures are often characterized by very high-contrast exposures, shadows and strong color effects, which are not only created by the type of recording, but also by digital post-processing.

In addition to exhibition projects that could be seen at the Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne , the FORMA , Milan and numerous New York galleries, Kalina also took photos for well-known bands and performers such as Air , Jon Spencer and Sigur Rós . For four years Kalina also worked as the main photographer of various city guides (for example: AOL CityGuide and Eater.com), from which the Interiors project developed, during which Kalina photographed more than 3000 deserted interiors of restaurants in New York.

Kalina became known to the general public through the viral video Everyday he produced , which he presented on various video portals on the Internet from August 2006 and which was viewed over 25 million times on YouTube alone . The success of the video sparked discussions as to whether projects of this type were photographic art. Richard Benson , professor of photography at Yale University , called the project a "complete waste of time." William Ewing, director of the Musée de l'Elysée, on the other hand, said that Kalina's work “helped establish a new form of portrait”. Everyday is now part of the permanent collection of the Austin Museum of Art.
