Noble Wimberly Jones (* 1723 in London , England , † January 9, 1805 in Savannah , Georgia ) was an English- American politician . In 1781 and 1782 he was a delegate for Georgia to the Continental Congress .
Career
In 1733 Noble Jones came to Savannah in what was then the British colony of Georgia with his parents. The father, who was also called Noble Jones, was involved in leading positions in building the colony. The younger Jones studied medicine and practiced as a doctor in Savannah between 1756 and 1774. Between 1755 and 1772 he was a member of the colonial House of Representatives, with a few interruptions. In 1768 and 1769 he was its chairman.
In the 1770s, Jones joined the revolutionary movement. In 1775 he became a member of the security committee of his home country and the Provincial Congress . In the years 1777 and 1778 he sat in the House of Representatives from Georgia , as its speaker he subsequently acted several times. He was also involved in drafting the constitution of the future state of Georgia. At the beginning of the Revolutionary War , he took part in a successful raid on a British ammunition dump in Georgia. The booty was handed over to the American armed forces. Since Jones in Georgia played a leading role in the struggle of the colonists against the British, they saw in him a serious danger and sought his capture. When British troops neared Savannah, he fled to Charleston , South Carolina . As this city in 1780, fell into British hands, he was arrested and for some time in St. Augustine ( Florida imprisoned). In 1781 he was released again through a prisoner exchange. In the same year he began to represent his state in the Continental Congress in Philadelphia .
In 1782 he returned to Savannah, where he again worked as a doctor. A year later he was re-elected to the Georgia House of Representatives; in 1795 he was a delegate to a constitutional convention of his state. Noble Jones died in Savannah on January 9, 1805. His son George (1766-1838) became a US Senator for Georgia.
