Noblella personina is a very small frog from the family of craugastoridae . It is endemic to the eastern Andes mountain rangein Ecuador .

features

In terms of color, Noblella personina is adapted to life on the ground in fallen leaves. The basic color of the frog is light brown with dark brown dots and spots, as well as drawings on the head and legs. The skin on the back is finely grained. The belly is light, yellowish to pale yellow. The dark brown mask around the eyes is reduced, it does not reach to the arms as in other species. The eyes are dark with a narrow, orange ring.

The first finger on the forelegs is shorter than the second in Noblella personina . On the hind limbs, the fifth toe protrudes over the third. Noblella personina , like Noblella pygmaea from Peru, has three finger bones on the fourth finger. The species differs from the related species Noblella lochites and Noblella myrmecoides , which also occur on the eastern slopes of the Andes in Ecuador at different altitudes, and have only two phalanges on the fourth finger.

distribution and habitat

Noblella personina inhabits the montane mountain rainforest , cloud forest and shrub communities between 1600 and 1920 meters altitude on the eastern slope of the Andes in Ecuador. The site of the type specimen of the species is located in the Sangay National Park in the Morona Santiago province near the Lagunas de Sardinayacu chain of lakes .

Way of life

Noblella personina lives on the ground in the fallen leaves of the evergreen deciduous forests. A direct development from egg to young frog is typical of the entire Craugastoridae family. The aquatic tadpole stage is skipped, the larval development takes place within the eggs laid on land. Noblella personina therefore belongs to the Terrarana group within the frogs .

Taxonomy

The genus Noblella was named by the American zoologist Thomas Barbour in 1930 after his friend and fellow student Gladwyn Kingsley Noble . In 2008 the genus was re-established and the species previously grouped under the synonym Phyllonastes were assigned to this genus. Hedges et al. placed Noblella in the Strabomantidae family in 2008, but in 2011 this family was merged with the Craugastoridae by Pyron and Wiens. In 2013 Noblella personina was described as the eleventh species of the genus Noblella .
