Cam (court)
Nocken or Nockerln , Italian gnocchi [ ˈɲɔkːi ] ( , singular gnocco ), are egg-shaped or Spätzle-like shaped dough masses used in southern German and Alpine cuisine ; but they are also known in neighboring countries. The small dumplings or slices are made from a dough made from flour , semolina ( wheat or corn ), boiled potatoes , chestnut flour or other ingredients such as pumpkin , spinach and ricotta , which is usually bound with an egg . Herbs are also occasionally added. They are usually cooked in salt water and are often used as a soup or side dish . If they represent their own dish, they are often gratinated with cheese or, especially as gnocchi in Italian cuisine , as the first main course, similar to pasta .
Word origin
The origin of the word is based on the technical term cam , which has been proven since the 1st century , which describes the protrusion on a disc or shaft. The same root also includes: Nock , which means small mountain or the end of a round wood, and since the 18th century the Austrian dumpling Nocken with its diminutive Nockerl .
