Nodar Kalistratowitsch Gabunia ( Georgian ნოდარ გაბუნია ; Russian Нодар Калистратович Габуния ; born July 9, 1933 in Tbilisi , † August 31, 2000 in Amsterdam ) was a Georgian composer and pianist.

Life

Gabunia studied at the Tbilisi Conservatory from 1951 , but moved to the Moscow Conservatory in 1954 , where he studied piano with Alexander Goldenweiser and composition with Aram Chatschaturjan . After the final completion of his studies in 1962, he immediately began teaching at the State Conservatory in Tbilisi. In 1966 he became a lecturer, in 1976 a professor and finally he took over the post of rector in 1984, which he held until his death. Internationally he appeared as a visiting professor at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague . Gabunia was also active as a concert pianist. In addition, he was temporarily active as a functionary in the Soviet and Georgian composers' association. During his life he received both Georgian and international orders and awards. Gabunia died in Amsterdam but was buried in his hometown.

style

Gabunia's works are strongly influenced by the pursuit of an originally Georgian tonal language. He tried to reproduce Georgian music unadulterated by romanticism and Europeanizing influences. In doing so, he made particular use of the methods of Béla Bartók , a composer he valued very much. Gabunia also resorted to contemporary stylistic devices, but remained a rather moderately modern composer. His works are based on the extended, modal embossed tonality . Even neo-classical influences can be traced in his work. A concertante, virtuoso element is often characteristic. Gabunia liked to perform with its own works. His repertoire was quite broad and included works by Bach and Beethoven as well as more recent music by Bartók, Prokofjew and others.
