Life

Kancheli was born in Moscow as the son of an architect of Georgian origin and graduated from civil engineering college in 1960. In the 1960s, Kancheli worked in Moscow's urban planning department, where he was also involved in the design of several buildings that were later realized. He also studied mathematics at Lomonosov University and graduated in 1968.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Kancheli participated as an engineer in the Soyuz Spa Project organization in the construction of recreational facilities, including a sanatorium in Yalta on the Crimean peninsula , which was completed in 1985 .

In the 1990s, Kancheli was again active in Moscow and won the favor of Mayor Luzhkov with his construction projects . Kancheli placed the thematic focus on the erection of roof structures; So he designed a new roof for the old trading rows near Red Square and the new dome of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior when it was restored from 1995 to 2000. Kantscheli also participated in the construction of the Mercedes-Benz Avilon in Moscow in 2003, the Speed skating rink in Kolomna and on the renovation work on the building of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow.

On February 14, 2004, the roof dome designed by Kantscheli for the Transvaal Park leisure pool, which was completed in 2002, collapsed while it was still in operation, killing 28 people. Two years later, on February 23, 2006, the roof of the Basmanny market hall , which had been built in 1977 with Kantscheli's participation, collapsed with 66 dead. Kantscheli's complicity in these incidents is controversial and has not been proven. In 2005, an investigation was initiated against Kancheli for negligent homicide in the case of the leisure pool, but was later discontinued. The main reason for the collapse of the market hall was found to be incorrect use (overload) in combination with a lack of maintenance.
