Nogales , officially Heroica Nogales , is a city in the Mexican state of Sonora with 212,533 inhabitants (2010). The city, seat of the Municipio Nogales , is located in the north-west of Sonora directly on the border with the USA and merges with the city of Nogales (Arizona) in the north .
history
In 1841, when the border with the United States ran even further north, the Mexican government gave the land to a family named Elías. Because of the walnut trees that grew there, it was called Los Nogales de Elías ( Spanish : nogal - walnut tree). With the Gadsden purchase in 1853, the northern half of the area came to the United States. Two brothers of Russian descent, Jacob and Isaac Isaacson, set up a trading post on the border that was named Nogales by the United States Postal Service in 1880 .

The total population in 2010 was 220,292 people. In 2000 it was 159,103, in 1990 it was only 105,873.
