Nola Anderson Haynes
Nola Anderson Haynes (born January 9, 1897 in Linn County , Missouri , † December 21, 1996 ) was an American mathematician and university professor .
life and work
Nola Anderson was born on a farm in 1897 as one of four children. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1922 , she taught high school for two years and then accepted a position as a math teacher at the Central College for Women in Lexington . She returned to the University of Missouri , Columbia for her Masters . She did her doctorate in 1929 under Louis Ingold (1872-1935) with the dissertation "An Extension of Maschke's Symbolism" majoring in mathematics with a minor in astronomy . She then taught in the math department, where few women taught at the time. From 1946 until her retirement in 1967, she taught as an associate professor at the University of Missouri. She was the author of three articles on her research in geometry: "An Extension of Maschke's Symbolism" in the American Journal of Mathematics, 1929; "The Trigonometry of Hyperspace" in The American Mathematical Monthly, 1929 and 1936 "Normals to a Space Vn in Hyperspace" in the Bulletin of the American Mathematics Society. In memory of her late husband, who served as chairman of the astronomy department for many years, she established the Eli Stuart Haynes and the Nola Anderson Haynes Scholarship Fund. In 1995 they presented the Institute of Mathematics and the College of Arts & Science with the first Silver Chalk Award.
