history

The place where the house is located, Den Grønlandske Handels Plads , is with neighboring Krøyers Plads on Bjørnholm Island , which was laid out in the 18th century. For more than 200 years, the place was the center of Danish trade with the Faroe Islands, Finnmark , Iceland and Greenland, where large quantities of whale and seals were drunk, but also stockfish , eiderdown , reindeer horn, salted lamb and cod , wool and knitting wool was traded. In 1747 the place was taken over by the trading company Det almindelige Handelskompagni , which traded with the countries mentioned. The company built the 6,700 m² warehouse in 1766–67 based on a design by Johan Christian Conradi , which was initially called Islandske Pakhus (Icelandic Warehouse ) and later Det Grønlandske Pakhus (The Greenlandic Warehouse ). In 1774 the site was taken over by Den Kongelige Grønlandske Handel and in the early 1980s by the Danish customs and tax authorities Told & Skat .

On the initiative of the former director of the Danish Polar Center ( Dansk Polar Center ) , Morten Melgaard, and the former director of the Customs and Excise Department, Kaj Elkrog, 1997 was Committee for the Development of the North Atlantic Quays (Komiteen til Udviklingen af the Nordatlantiske Brygge) founded - together with the former Icelandic President Vigdís Finnbogadóttir . In the committee, representatives from Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Denmark coordinated the design of the building - in coordination with the individual countries, their governments, the København municipality and a large number of associations, museums, universities and other institutions. In 2000, the committee was replaced by the Nordatlantiske Brygge Foundation , whose management and board of directors now operate the cultural center. As chairman of the foundation, Finnbogadóttir organized the costs of 125 million Danish kroner , of which 45 million came from the Danish state, 20 million from the AP Møller Fund and 60 million from Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. After the renovation of the storage facility, Nordatlantens Brygge was finally opened in November 2003.

In 2003, the Michelin-starred restaurant Noma opened on the ground floor and was named “Best Restaurant in the World” four times in a row by British Restaurant Magazine from 2010 to 2014. It closed there at the end of 2016. Reopening is planned for 2017 in the free city of Christiania .
