With the establishment of the association founded by Hermann Wilhelm Bödeker in 1839, people met every day and regardless of the weather from half past seven in the morning, including specially invited guests of the pastor. After a hike to the Lister Tower , which at the time was still outside the city limits, the group gathered there or at the New House to have a casual cup of coffee together . Information about “big politics” was exchanged as well as local and family issues.

Bödeker, who ceaselessly campaigned for donations for the social and church institutions he founded, especially among his personal guests, held the collection box in front of the participants of his promenade club twice a week until the sculptor Georg Hurtzig created the so-called "Bödekerenangels" as an alternative in 1854 would have. The money should go to needy children in particular . In addition, Bödeker also collected for the construction of the fleet of the German Confederation and for the construction of the Hermannsdenkmal , especially since its creator, Ernst von Bandel , manufactured large parts of the memorial in his Hanoverian workshop.

After Bödeker's death in 1875, the club he dominated gradually fell apart. A few years after Bödeker's death, who had almost institutionalized fundraising for charitable or patriotic purposes , the Association against House Begging was founded in 1879 , which a good four decades later established the Werkheim for the homeless in Hanover.
