The North Passage ( English North Pass ) in the north of the Fildes Peninsula of King George Island , the largest of the South Shetland Islands , is the flat area between the Bellingshausen Dome (labeled on the German map from 1984 as "Collinseiskappe") in the northeast and the Davies Heights ("central mountains" on the map) in the southwest. It serves as a link between the research stations at Maxwell Bay , in particular Base Artigas , and the north-west of the peninsula. The Bellingshausen Dome is bounded in this area by the southern Collins moraine and drained from the Schiffsbach to the southeast via Artigas Beach to the ship's bay in the north of Maxwell Bay .

As part of two German expeditions to the Fildes Peninsula in 1981/82 and 1983/84 under the direction of Dietrich Barsch (Geographical Institute of the University of Heidelberg ) and Gerhard Stäblein (Geomorphological Laboratory of the Free University of Berlin ), the passage along with numerous others until then unnamed geographic features of the Fildes peninsula and renamed the Scientific Committee on Antarctic research (Scientific Committee on Antarctic research, SCAR) reported.

The British Antarctic Place-names Committee (APC) reported the passage to SCAR in 2007 (with more precise coordinates) under the name North Pass .

As mentioned in the British description, the area was named by Chinese scientists of the Great Wall Station in 1986 as the "Northeastern Eisrandtal" ( Chinese  东北 冰缘 谷地 , Pinyin Dōngběi Bīngyuán Gǔdì ). However, this refers to the entire valley of the Schiffsbach up to the confluence with the ship's bay, so that the center of the area, which was also reported to the SCAR in 1986, is further southeast, at 62 ° 10 ′ 54.4 ″  S , 58 ° 54 ′ 4, 7 ″  W , lies.
