The Nordwoche was a social democratic weekly newspaper for Schleswig-Holstein , which appeared from April 11, 1969 to October 1, 1971 and was edited by the then SPD state chairman Jochen Steffen . It was intended to fill the party publicist void created by the discontinuation of the daily newspapers Schleswig-Holsteinische Volkszeitung (VZ) (December 31, 1968) and Lübecker Morgen (March 31, 1969), and also ensure the preservation of the Kiel VZ printing company. The publishing director was the deputy SPD state chairman and last editor-in-chief of Lübecker Morgen , Wilhelm Geusendam . The main editorial office was located in Kiel , while a local editorial office worked in Lübeck .

The north week started with 30,000 print copies. In the first edition, editor Steffen announced: “This newspaper takes the party of democratic socialism. But it is not a party newspaper as an organ of self-adulation. We do not want to restrict critical free thinking. ”And the SPD federal chairman Willy Brandt referred to the long tradition of the two discontinued daily newspapers and wrote:“ Now the 'Nordwoche' is taking over the torch to carry it on. ”

Right from the start, the newspaper received financial support from the SPD party executive in Bonn. Nevertheless, the economic development of the northern week was difficult from the start. After his experiences with the Lübecker Morgen, Geusendam placed the printing shop and not the editorial office and newspaper at the center of his efforts. Unlike Jochen Steffen, he was not prepared to publish an SPD weekly in Schleswig-Holstein in the format of the CSU Bavarian courier . Geusendam saved on the editorial costs and did not employ an experienced journalist as editor-in-chief, but instead the former engine expert and faction press spokesman Harald Schneider. In February 1970, the Kiel editorial team complained in a memorandum about the "extremely primitive requirements" of journalistic work. The two to three Lübeck local pages were filled by Gerd Walter and Hans-Jürgen Wolter .

As early as 1970, the northern week made a loss of almost 210,000 marks. Due to liquidity problems, its publication was discontinued on October 1, 1971. At that time, the newspaper only had 7,000 subscribers. The printing plant in Kiel was closed a year later.
