Norman Bottomley

Sir Norman Bottomley KCB , CIE , DSO , AFC (born September 18, 1891 in Yorkshire - † August 13, 1970 ) was a British officer in the Royal Air Force (RAF), most recently Air Chief Marshal . From 1947 to 1948 he was Inspector General of the British Air Force.

Life

Bottomley studied at the University of Rennes . After the beginning of World War I , he was accepted as 2nd Lieutenant in the East Yorkshire Regiment , before moving to the Royal Flying Corps , the forerunner of the Royal Air Force, in 1915 . where he worked as a trainer.

After the war he received a permanent rank as captain in the RAF. He attended RAF Staff College and Imperial Defense College in the interwar period . From 1934 he commanded a group of pilots in British India . In 1938 he joined the RAF Bomber Command , where he initially worked as a Senior Air Staff Officer . In November 1940 he became the commanding officer of No. 5 Bomber Group and deputy in June of the following year Chief of Air Staff ( Deputy Chief of the Air Staff ) , one of the highest posts in the RAF. Between May 1942 and July 1943, his post was Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Operations) .

After the end of the war, he succeeded Arthur Harris as Commander-in-Chief of Bomber Command in September 1945 and Inspector General of the Royal Air Force in January 1947, but already resigned in 1948. He then worked for the BBC as Director of Administration until 1956 .
