Life

Norman Kaye was born in Melbourne and attended Geelong Grammar School. His extraordinary musical talent fell on Dr. AE Floyd, organist at Saint Paul's Cathedral in Melbourne. He gave Kaye free organ lessons . Kaye traveled to France to study the Notre Dame de Paris organ with Pierre Cochereau . At the Conservatory of Nice , he won a first prize in conducting.

From 1958 to 1977 Kaye was a choirmaster and music teacher at Caulfield Grammar School. The security of his teacher's salary enabled him to turn to acting.

As an actor, Kaye was initially cast in supporting roles such as 1976 in Illuminations and 1979 Kostas by director Paul Cox . Cox cast Kaye as the lead in Lonely Hearts in 1982 and Man of Flowers in 1983 . Kaye starred in a variety of films and television productions throughout his life. However, he is known for his collaboration with director Paul Cox, who cast him in 16 of his 21 films. In 2005, Norman Kaye was the subject of Cox's biographical film The Remarkable Mr Kaye , which was intended as a tribute to their longstanding friendship and collaboration. Kaye has also worked as a film music composer.

In 1997, Kaye was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease . His inability to remember the text in the 2000 film Innocence led to the end of his collaboration with Cox. When Norman Kaye died in 2007, he was assisted by the opera director Elke Neidhardt , with whom he had a relationship that lasted 35 years.
