Norman Lane

Norman D. Lane (born November 6, 1919 in Toronto , Ontario , † August 6, 2014 in Hamilton , Ontario) was a Canadian canoeist and mathematician .

Life

Lane was third in the Canadian Championships in 1940. At the 1948 Olympic Games in London, he won the bronze medal in the single canadians over 10,000 m. In 1950 he won the Canadian Championship. Two years later at the Olympic Games in Helsinki, he finished fifth. He ended his career as an athlete after failing to qualify for the 1960 Olympics.

Lane studied at the University of Toronto , where he received his PhD. From 1952 to 1987 he taught mathematics at McMaster University in Hamilton (Ontario) .

He was married to his wife Doris for 71 years. The couple had five sons.

Lane had a sister and two brothers. His brother Ken Lane (1923-2010) was also a canoeist. He won a silver medal in Helsinki in 1952.
