The North-East Region (or Northeast) is one of the five regions of the city-state of Singapore . It had 922,980 inhabitants in 2019 (only resident population). The region is the third most populous and has the highest population density of the five regions, with Hougang being the most populous neighborhood in 2018 and Seletar being the regional center. The region comprises seven planning areas and is largely a residential region with 217,120 apartments (as of 2015). As the name suggests, it is located in northeast Singapore.

Seletar

The region is home to Seletar Aerospace Park , which is home to several aerospace manufacturing and research facilities owned by companies such as Rolls-Royce , Pratt & Whitney, and Singapore Technologies Aerospace . That way, Singapore's aviation industry could expand from Changi . This makes it an important aviation and trade zone in the east of the country. There are also several industrial areas within the region. In the area of the Seletar Aerospace Park there were defensive structures like the Seletar Camp together with the Seletar Airport. The HQ Army Combat Engineers Group is also located in Seletar Camp .

To clear the land for redevelopment, the Army Combat Engineers Group and its sub-units were brought together on a 30-acre site and the main gate moved to St. Martin Lane. In June 2012, DSTA completed the development of the site and, through careful planning, achieved significant intensification. The result was the consolidation of administrative, training, maintenance and recreational facilities as well as the accommodation that was originally housed in the low buildings. In order to minimize the number of buildings, facilities with strong functional relationships and compatible building functions were housed together, 170 old buildings were merged together with the old medical center into 25 new multi-storey facilities and these were distributed along the original eastern warehouse of Seletar. The warehouse has currently been reduced to 30 hectares.

In May 2006, the Singapore government, together with the Economic Development Board (EDB) and JTC Corporation, presented the plan for a new aerospace park. The decision was made when the aerospace industry in Singapore saw increasing growth potential and also strong demand for aerospace related services. JTC Corporation has been asked to conduct master planning and infrastructure improvements for Seletar Aerospace Park in consultation with other government agencies. The development of the new aerospace center is expected to meet the industry's land needs for at least 10 years. The master plan was announced on June 26, 2007. The new road was completed first, Seletar West Link, followed by the opening of Seletar Aerospace Drive after the economic downturn in 2009.

North-Eastern Islands

The North-Eastern Islands are of touristic importance and are one of the last places in the country to have a rural character and unspoiled nature. The tourist island includes the Pulau Ubin and Coney Island.

politics

Politically, the northeast of Singapore is the most interesting part, where both the ruling and opposition parties are represented in parliament. PAP represents Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC under Teo Chee Hean and Ang Mo Kio GRC under Lee Hsien Loong .

Before 2001, all Sengkang and Punggol and half of the Hougang were part of the Cheng San GRC from 1988, which consists of the five now defunct stations (Jalan Kayu, Paya Lebar, Punggol, Serangoon Gardens) and Upper Serangoon.

The offshore island of Coney Island (Pulau Serangoon) was relocated from the East Coast GRC to Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC from 1955 to 1997 after a long service in the Changi region, before being accepted into the East Coast GRC (Siglap) in 2015.

Sengkang GRC was established in 2020 with the growing population of Sengkang. It was formed by the merger of Punggol East SMC, Sengkang West SMC and Sengkang Central part of the Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC. Punggol East was once dominated by the Labor Party from 2013 to 2015.

The Labor Party represents Hougang and Serangoon for the Aljunied GRC under Low Thia Khiang . Low Thia Khiang left Hougang SMC to run against Aljunied GRC before the 2011 election (and later to vote himself). He was replaced by Yaw Shin Leong, another WP candidate who previously competed in Ang Mo Kio GRC in the 2006 election. Yaw remained a MP until his expulsion from the CEC and resigned from his seat in February 2012 because of an extramarital affair. Png Eng Huat, a candidate whose part of the WP team ran against the East Coast GRC in the 2011 elections, had represented that community since winning his by-election in May 2012.

Before 2011, Chiam See Tong was present in Potong Pasir under the Singapore People's Party and the Singapore Democratic Alliance in the opposition.

traffic

The North East Line goes all the way to Sengkang and Punggol on the north coast of the island, but doesn't get to very interesting places even for the most determined traveler. However, the Circle Line only crosses parts of Bartley, Serangoon and Lorong Chuan. The Sengkang LRT and the Punggol LRT are the branches of the northeast line that runs through the housing developments.

Starting in 2029, the new Cross Island Line MRT line will run through the remaining parts of Serangoon North, Hougang, Defu, Elias, Riviera and Punggol.

education

Residents of the area have access to a variety of educational facilities, ranging from preschools to elementary and secondary schools, as these are located in the various cities in the northeast. Facilities such as the ITE College Central , the Nanyang Polytechnic , the Singapore Institute of Technology, the French School and the Global Indian International School are also located here.
