Surname
Known as "Lakewood" since the early 20th century, the name was changed after the parish of the same name in Pierce County was recognized as the City of Lakewood in 1996. This quickly created confusion at the Post Office as there were now two parishes with the same name. To solve the problem, the United States Postal Service gave the Pierce County community the right to use "Lakewood, Washington" as a name; since then this has been a recognized city. The name of the parish in Snohomish County was changed to "North Lakewood", which was not recognized at the time. It also allowed the Snohomish County community to keep the post office. As of 2005, that part of North Lakewood that is within its growth limits has been part of the City of Marysville .
