history

At the Anta Grande do Zambujeiro

Antas and other finds document a prehistoric settlement from around 3,000 BC. BC, including the Anta Grande do Zambujeiro and the Antas do Barrocal . Excavations and finds from Roman times testify to a relatively important village, including larger baths and an adjacent villa .

Today's place was probably built much later, during the Christian Reconquista , as evidenced by the remains of the medieval castle Castelo de Geraldo . In the early 16th century, the village was a resort for the Bishop of Évora.

Nossa Senhora da Tourega remained an independent municipality until it was dissolved with the territorial reform in 2013 and merged with Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe .
