The squid beetles ( Notiophilus ) are a genus of beetles from the family of ground beetles (Carabidae) within the subfamily Nebriinae . It occurs in Europe with 14 species and subspecies, 8 are also native to Central Europe.

The beetles are only 3.5 to 5.5 millimeters long. They have a flat body with a broad, parallel shape and a shiny metallic color. Her head is large, her slanted compound eyes are very large. Your pronotum is broad, its front edge is pointed. The cover wings have nine rows of points, but one is missing between the first and second row, resulting in a wide, smooth, elongated field. Some species can only be determined with certainty from a genital examination .

The larvae look similar to those of the periwinkle ( Nebria ), but their thighs, splints and tarsi are of the same length and have a rough surface.

Occurrence and way of life

The diurnal animals live in dry places, especially in clearings, meadows and heaths and hide under moss and stones. You can see them walking on the ground above the leaves. They predatory feed on springtails and mites . In Central Europe they occur in August and September. They mostly overwinter as adults .
