The Krainer Schneeberg (Slovenian Snežnik or Notranjski Snežnik , Italian Monte Nevoso , Latin Mons Albus ) is an extensive limestone plateau in the Slovenian Karst in the northern part of the Dinaric Mountains , the summit of which reaches a height of 1796 m.

The Snežnik is located east of Ilirska Bistrica near the border with the Croatian Gorski Kotar . The limestone plateau, known for its karst phenomena, extends over an area of ​​85 km².

The Krainer Schneeberg area has a larger population of brown bears (estimated between 500 and 700 animals in 2006). Among the flora, the Velebit lady's mantle should be emphasized. The area has been protected as a wilderness area ( Wilderness Area IUCN Ib ) since 1964 under the name Notranjski Sneznik Nature Reserve .

Mountain sports

The renaissance castle Schneeberg (Grad Snežnik) was first mentioned in 1268; the Lords of Schneeberg were ministerials to the Patriarchs of Aquileia . From 1393 they were partially followed by the Lords of Lamberg in the 15th century . The castle served the Schönburg-Waldenburg family as a summer resort and hunting lodge until 1945 . It has been open to visitors since 1983.
