Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption (Bréal-sous-Vitré)
The Catholic parish church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption in Bréal-sous-Vitré , a French parish in the Ille-et-Vilaine department in Brittany , was built in the 11th century.
history
The church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin replaced a previous wooden building that belonged to a priory of the Saint-Serge Abbey in Angers . The priory church became the parish church of Bréal-sous-Vitré in the Middle Ages .
architecture
The simple nave is separated by a triumphal arch from a choir consisting of a choir bay and a semicircular apse . The choir, which has no vault , is a little lower and narrower than the nave. The slate-roofed bell tower rises above the triumphal arch . The choir is lit by five windows of different sizes. The two windows in the choir bay were enlarged at a later time. The walls of the church, which are supported by mighty buttresses , are made of broken slate stones.
In the west facade, a round arch portal opens between two buttresses, which is roofed over by a wooden porch.
Furnishing
A monolithic baptismal font , which is decorated with a three-leaf ornament, is worth mentioning from the church furnishings .
