Nova Esperança ( Portuguese for New Hope , Chinese新 希望) is a political party in the Macau Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China . Your chairman and currently the only deputies to the Legislative Assembly of Macau , the Portuguese citizen José Pereira Coutinho .

history

In the parliamentary elections in 2005 Nova Esperança stood for the first time and won with 9973 votes a share of 7.99% and a seat in the Legislative Assembly, which the list leader José Pereira Coutinho was occupied. In the parliamentary elections in 2009 , the party received 12,908 votes, which corresponds to a share of 9.10% and the seat could be defended. After the parliamentary elections in 2013 , the party was even able to win two seats , although it lost 13,118 votes and a share of 8.96%, but at the same time moved up from sixth place to fifth place among the strongest parties. Next to José Pereira Coutinho, Leong Veng Chai was the second MP. In the last parliamentary election in 2017 , Nova Esperança was able to maintain its level with 14,383 votes and 8.33% of the votes, but due to the large number of electoral lists , the party was only able to win one seat. Other parties ran with two electoral lists in order to receive two seats; for Nova Esperança this procedure was not possible due to the high costs of an electoral list of 25,000 patacas , although it would not have been difficult to collect an additional 500 signatures for the candidacy.

Alignment

The party is in fact the political arm of the Associação dos Trabalhadores da Função Pública de Macau, the union for the public sector in Macau, which, like the German ver.di, is a member of the International Public Services . In terms of personnel, the electoral list is closely networked with the union, José Pereira Coutinho is both president of the union and list leader of the Nova Esperança electoral list.

Her political priorities include a social housing policy , improving the situation for women in the labor market and more rigorous control of the casinos , as the Macau government mainly supports the casinos instead of worrying about health and social policy . In addition, an important goal of the party is to involve the citizens of Macau more closely in the politics of the Special Administrative Region. For this purpose, for example, the work of the Legislative Assembly should be more transparent for the citizens. The civil society in Macau is traditionally weaker than for example in Hong Kong , the interest in politics is thus pronounced less strongly. Thanks to the social commitment of José Pereira Coutinho, Nova Esperança has also managed to get people who are less interested in politics excited about politics by denouncing social grievances. It is also important that the elections are fair and that corruption is restricted. Nova Esperança is seen as part of the pro-democracy camp .

In addition, the party sees itself as a representative of the Portuguese-speaking and Macanese- speaking minorities and the Macanese in Macau. This includes, for example, the preservation of Portuguese as the official language of Macau.
