from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1995 November Storm or Storm on November 17, 1995 was a blizzard that hit Sweden very hard, especially in the southern and western parts. It was the heaviest snow storm of the decade. It started over the North Sea .

It began on Thursday evening, November 16, 1995. It reached its greatest strength on the morning of November 17. Already in the afternoon of the same day the strength of the storm decreased and a little later it moved towards Denmark . On the morning of November 18, the depth of snow in parts of Götaland was up to 60 cm. Ten kilometers northeast of Huskvarna even up to 80 cm, in drifts significantly higher.

Gothenburg and the surrounding area were almost completely paralyzed by the snow masses and their drift . Due to the strong wind, it was almost impossible to keep the roads clear. These closed again after a short time. In some areas, the snow was waited until the wind and snowfall subsided. The military was also involved in overcoming the snow masses.

It was not until Tuesday, November 21, that the traffic situation was satisfactorily restored.

Record highs for snow

Since records began in 1905, record heights for snow have been recorded in November. Here are some examples of the averages for the regions mentioned:

place Year 1995 Previous record

traffic

Many trees were felled by the storm. The road was particularly hard hit. People were locked in with their cars and sometimes had to wait a long time for help. ( Cell phones weren't widespread at the time and were just beginning to become fashionable). Various schools remained closed because the children simply could not reach them. Likewise, many people had great problems getting to work.

Sports

Sports were also affected by the blizzard. Many events had to be postponed to other days as it was sometimes impossible for the athletes to get to and from the respective venues. The Swedish basketball league, for example, had to move many games from Friday evening to other dates.

The traditional Novemberkåsan race could not take place for the first time in its history due to heavy snowfall and was postponed to December.
