Nuclear Death was an American grindcore , death and thrash metal band from Phoenix , Arizona that was formed in 1986 and split up in 2000.

history

The band was formed in December 1985, the official founding date of Nuclear Death being March 23, 1986. Bassist and singer Laura "Lori" Bravo and guitarist Phil Hampson took part in their first demo that same year, Wake Me When I'm Dead where Joel Whitfield played the drums. In the following years two further demos followed with Welcome to the Minds of the Morbid (1987), A Symphony of Agony (1987) and Vultures Feeding (1988). The two demos were released in 1989 as a compilation under the name Caveat . After that, Nuclear Death signed a contract with Wild Rags Records . This label released their first two albums, Bride of Insects (1990) and Carrion for Worm (1991). On the second album, Chris Reifert from Autopsy can be heard as a guest singer in two songs . Ten years later, both albums were released as a compilation on Extremist Records . After the EP … for Our Dead… was released in 1992, the band split from Wild Rags Records.

After the drummer Whitfield left the band, Hampson also left. Steve Cowan joined the group as the new drummer. In 1992 the album All Creatures Great and Eaten was released , followed by the next in 1996 under the name The Planet Cachexial . Cowan was no longer included on the Harmony Drinks of Me , published the following year . Shortly afterwards, the band broke up and Bravo formed a new band under the name Raped.

style

According to the band biography on nucleardeath.net , all of the songs Wake Me When I'm Dead , with the exception of The 7th Nun , which was written by Hampson, were written by Bravo. Since Hampson is a fan of horror literature and had about 5000 books his own at the time, it was soon decided that Hampson should write the lyrics for all other songs. The lyrics have almost nothing to do with reality, except for a song that addresses heroin addiction . According to Allmusic's Greg Prato , Nuclear Death is one of the few thrash and death metal bands with a female singer. According to Metalion in Buc Metalion: The Slayer Mag Diaries , the band plays aggressive and straightforward Thrash Metal on Wake Me When I'm Dead . One could not hear the singing that it came from a woman. It is different on Welcome to the Minds of the Morbid , but the vocals are still aggressive. Decibel magazine wrote about Bride of Insect that the band played a mixture of Thrash Metal, Death Metal and early Grindcore on it. The vocals are one of the most brutal female chants in the metal genre. The group was influenced by bands like Venom , Motörhead , Discharge , Witchfinder General and Plasmatics .
