The nucleohelea are a group of heterotrophic protists that were systematically regarded as sun animals for a long time, but are now part of the Cercozoa .
features
The nucleohelea are unicellular amoeboid organisms. Their characteristic features are an amorphous centrosome that lies against the nuclear envelope (axoplast); Mitochondria with tubular cristae; their axopods ( pseudopodia ) are reinforced by microtubules .
Systematics
Because of their morphology, the representatives of the nucleohelea were placed among the sun animals earlier . However, molecular genetic studies showed that they belong to the Cercozoa . Today they form part of the core Cercozoa .
The nucleohelea comprise two groups:
- Clathrulinidae (= Desmothoracida)
- Gymnosphaerida
There are 160 to 180 described species, the total number is estimated at around 200.
