Nueva Italia de Ruiz is the capital of the Municipio Múgica in the Mexican state of Michoacán . The city is 418 meters above sea level and officially counted 32,467 inhabitants at the last survey.

history

The territory on which the present city emerged once belonged to the extensive estates of a family called Velasco and was acquired by the Italian Dante Cussi at the beginning of the 20th century. Around this time the area called Nueva Italia was inhabited by about 20 families who made a living from growing maize and raising cattle . In 1938 the then Mexican President Lázaro Cárdenas del Río expropriated the property to give it to the parishioners. In 1942 Nueva Italia received the addition of de Ruiz in memory of the Michoacán-born politician, historian and writer Eduardo Ruiz Álvarez .

Sports

The city is home to the Rosendo Arnaíz sports complex with several football , basketball and volleyball courts . This was the home of the Mapaches Nueva Italia football team , which in 2008 was promoted from the fourth-class Tercera División to the third-class Segunda División . But just a few months later, the dream of blooming football was over after club boss Wenceslao "El Wuenchis" Álvarez was arrested for alleged links to the drug cartels La Familia Michoacana and Los Zetas . Without a financier, the team fell apart and played no more games, so the players joined other clubs. One of these players of the then Mapaches (German raccoons ) was the future Mexican national player Ángel Sepúlveda .
