Múgica is a municipality in the Mexican state of Michoacán in the Infiernillo region . The municipality had 44,963 inhabitants at the 2010 census; the area of ​​the municipality is 378.7 km². The largest place in the municipality and administrative seat is Nueva Italia de Ruiz .

Múgica is named after Francisco José Múgica , a Mexican revolutionary and politician.

geography

The Municipio Múgica is located slightly south of the center of the Mexican state Michoacán at heights between 200  m and 700  m in the Infiernillo region . It is 82% in the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre del Sur and 18% in the Sierra Volcánica Transversal and entirely in the hydrological region of Balsas . The geology of the Municipalities is 32% of sandstone - conglomerate determined at 26% each alluvium and tuff and 10% basalt ; the predominant soil types are vertisol (69%) and calcisol (24%). About 65% of the community area is used as pasture land, about 21% is forested.

The Municipio Múgica borders the Municipios Parácuaro , Gabriel Zamora and La Huacana .

The 2010 census counted 44,963 people in 10,830 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 108 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language . Almost 14 percent of the population were illiterate. 17,617 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 72% were men or 1.9% were unemployed. 25% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
