Nuno Oliveira (born June 23, 1925 in Lisbon , † February 2, 1989 in Australia ) was a Portuguese riding master and author.

Life

At a young age, inspired by his riding instructor Concalves de Miranda (1870–1940), a riding master of the Portuguese royal family, he made riding his calling at an early age. First in the urban area, later in the rural area of Lisbon, he worked incessantly with young and older horses from breeders, horse lovers and bullfighting riders. He was able to fall back on an immense and well-founded knowledge of the most important classical riding masters of earlier centuries.

In the 1960s, he became known beyond the borders of Portugal through appearances in large horse shows in London , Geneva and Brussels . In the 1970s and 1980s, students from all over the world came to learn from him and he gave courses in many countries outside of Europe.

He saw riding as an art , where in addition to technique and feeling, craft and knowledge, love also plays a large part. As a sport, he has never practiced riding, which is why he is not known as a tournament rider.

feature

Oliveira's special gift was to find the slightly different method for each individual horse with which it could successfully be developed to the top of its individual abilities. He worked with Iberian horses as well as thoroughbred and warmblood horses. Some of his most famous horses were Euclides (Lusitano / Andrade); Beau gesture ( Lusitano ); Talar ( Thoroughbred ), Soante ( Altér Real ), Bunker ( Budjonny ).

He was awarded the synthesis of the schools of the old French riding masters de la Gueriniere (18th century) and Baucher (19th century), which until then had been rather contrary to each other . Free from the stereotyped thinking that some classic riders had fallen into, he pragmatically used the resources of all schools when they promised success in working with the respective horse.
