François Baucher

François Baucher (born June 16, 1796 in Versailles , † March 14, 1873 in Paris ) was a French master of horse dressage . Baucher spoke out against the excessive counteraction of various aids.

Life

At the age of 14, Baucher came to Italy, where his uncle was in charge of the stables of Camillo Borghese . He returned to France after the fall of Napoleon and found work in the stables of the Duke of Berry. He lost this job, meanwhile married, in 1820 after the murder of the Duke. Baucher takes over the management of two riding arenas in Le Havre and Rouen . He begins to write down his training methods and publishes his first book in 1833, which is followed by more. In 1843 a German translation of his method of horsemanship according to new principles was created , based on the fourth edition. As early as 1844, the fifth edition of the book, which has been continuously developed, appears. After that, the publisher alone takes on the editing, which means that it remains practically unchanged until the eleventh edition. These editions are also known as “First Manner” of Baucher's. Only when the contract with his publisher expired in 1863 did Baucher bring out a twelfth, heavily modified edition, which is also referred to as his “second manner”. When his Méthode was again translated into German in 1884, the eighth edition, which was long out of date at that time, was used as the basis for the translation. A translation of his second manner (the thirteenth edition) was only published in autumn 2009 - a clear sign of how much Bafer's further development was being ignored in Germany.

In 1855 Baucher was seriously injured in an accident in the riding arena. A chandelier fell on him and wounded him so badly that he could no longer perform in public. It is speculated whether the permanent physical damage is a reason for the development of his second manner, or whether this is the normal development of his theories.

Baucher split the equestrian world into two camps during his lifetime. This split has persisted to this day and is expressed in the existence of two famous riding schools, the Spanish Riding School , which works according to the methods of François Robichon de la Guérinière , and the Cadre Noir , whose training program is based on the methods of Baager.
