history
The district was founded as a township for blacks during the apartheid period in 1955 , after the Langa district (isiXhosa for 'sun'), also inhabited by blacks , was no longer sufficient as a residential area. During the planning - as in other townships - attention was paid to optimal monitoring options for the security forces.
During the apartheid period, the Witdoeke were active in Nyanga, supported by the government and terrorized anti-apartheid fighters. The incidents were processed by the Goldstone Commission from 1991 .
Economy and Transport
Guided tours to Nyanga are offered for tourists. Nyanga is connected to the N2 national road and the M83 expressway. Passenger trains of the Metrorail Cape Town serve the Nyanga station on the Bonteheuwel Line.
Others
The poem The Child by Ingrid Jonker is about a child from Nyanga who was shot by the police during the apartheid period . Nelson Mandela read it in his opening address to the first freely elected National Assembly in 1994.
