Nymphaion (Smyrna)

Nymphaion near Smyrna (today's Kemalpaşa ), 29 kilometers east of İzmir , was one of the rulers' residences at the time of the exile of the Byzantine emperors in Nikaia . The well-preserved ruins of a late Byzantine palace can still be found here today.

Surname

The name Nymphaion means “well building” in Greek ( see Nymphaeum ).

history

  • Theodor II Laskaris and Michael VIII Palaiologos were crowned emperors in Nymphaion .
  • In 1214 a peace treaty between Nikaia and the Latin Empire was concluded in Nymphaion
  • In the years 1234/35 a (small) council took place between representatives of the Catholic and Byzantine Orthodox Churches, with the aim of reunifying both churches. The council had to be broken off.
  • On November 3rd, 1254 , Emperor John III died in Nymphaion .
  • In 1261 a treaty between Nikaia and Genoa was signed in Nymphaion .
  • In 1315 the city was captured by Turkish troops
