The facility was opened on May 11, 1963 and was initially used by the Borussia Rheine and VfB Rheine clubs. Initially the stadium had a capacity of 16,000 spectators. Today the capacity is 7,500 places. In 2002, on the north side of the stadium, the Dr. Bernd Windhoff grandstand opened, which offers 400 covered seats and 300 covered standing places. The BA.rena is located in the north of the city, surrounded by the Bentlager forest . The stadium is owned by FC Eintracht Rheine. There are four other grass pitches next to the stadium.

The BA.rena Stadion was originally called Delsen . From around 2002 the stadium was sponsored by the Auto-Senger-Stadion . In April 2010 it became the OBI Arena, the name of which goes back to the Obi hardware store chain . The stadium has been named BA.rena since July 1, 2019, after the BA group of companies from Ibbenbüren acquired the sponsorship rights.

The stadium achieved the highest average attendance in the 1973/74 season, when an average of 4,160 spectators saw the home games of VfB Rheine in the Association League Westphalia .
