International Office for Vine and Wine

The International Office for Vine and Wine - the predecessor organization of the OIV - was founded on November 29, 1924 by France , Italy , Spain , Tunisia , Hungary , Luxembourg and Greece to spread the supposed positive effects of wine consumption as well as on quality standards in production respect and coordinate nomenclature and research . This foundation was preceded by a first congress in Montpellier in 1874 , as phylloxera destroyed large parts of European winegrowing that year and a common solution to the fight against it was to be found. 35 years later, in 1908 and 1909, two more congresses (in Geneva and Paris ) were held, as phylloxera plagued the European continent more times during these years and because the extent of wine counterfeiting had increased sharply. The eventual establishment of the OIV came about with the signing of the international agreement in Paris.

The OIV divides its technical work into several commissions and sub-commissions:

  • Commission I - Viticulture
  • Commission II - Oenology
  • Commission III - Economy and Law
  • Commission IV - Safety and Health
    • Subcommittee 'Analysis Methods'
    • Subcommittee on table grapes, raisins and non-fermented vine products
