O joy over joy
O joy over joy is a Christmas carol from Silesia .
The song tells the Christmas story from the perspective of a shepherd who tells of how he hurried to the stable of Bethlehem after the announcement of the birth of Jesus by the angels ( Lk 2.8–20 EU ) and quietly observed the Holy Family .
history
The current version with melody was recorded around 1840 in the Opole area with Silesian text. Older sources, including a flying sheet from 1753 with partially corrupted text, as well as an impression with the indication of origin Fulnek in the Kuhländchen by Joseph Georg Meinert in 1817, indicate an earlier origin. Hoffmann von Fallersleben assumes that it was made towards the end of the 17th century without giving any reason. He also mentions two further melody versions from the Grafschaft Glatz and from Goschütz , but the Opole version prevailed in songbooks as early as the 19th century with predominantly High German text versions.
