Oakland Plantation (1940)

Oakland Plantation House or Youghall Plantation House , also known as Youghal Plantation House , refers to the main house of a plantation , which was built around 1750 about eleven kilometers east of Mount Pleasant in Charleston County of South Carolina in the United States . It is located about a mile south of US Highway 17 at Stratton Place and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 13, 1977 .

history

John Perrie came from Ireland in the area and purchased 982  acres (about 395  hectares ) of land, on which he docked a plantation. He named the plantation after Youghal in County Cork . After his death in 1713, his daughter inherited the plantation. Her husband transferred ownership to Captain George Benison in 1740. It is believed that he built the house. In 1755, Charles Barksdale, whose family owned the property for a century, bought the plantation. In the 1850s, Mary Barksdale and her husband James owned the plantation. Presumably they were responsible for the name change to Oakland Plantation. Philip E. Porcher became the owner of the plantation in 1859, and this family has owned it ever since.

Part of the land that once belonged to the plantation has recently been converted into industrial sites. In addition, 133 acres (around 53 hectares) were separated as a nature reserve.

architecture

Rear of the main house in 1940

The main house of the plantation is a one-and-a-half storey building in timber frame construction with a gambrel roof on a brick base. Originally there were chimneys at both ends of the house, today only one of them remains. Five steps lead up to the entrance, whose portico with a gable roof is supported by two Tuscan columns. These were added to the building later. The entrance door is in the center of the facade. There are four skylights above the door . On both sides of the entrance there are two opening windows with nine lattice fields each.

A side wing with a kitchen was added to the structure in the 1920s. This extension has a similar roof, the windows are rounded and have double sashes at the front. The back is similar to the front, but the half-roof is supported by square plastered pillars. The wooden floor of the veranda was replaced by a concrete terrace at the rear. On the left side there are two rows of windows with three pull-out windows with nine muntin fields on each level. The middle window has replaced the distant fireplace.

The four rooms on the ground floor are arranged around a centrally placed hall. The entrance door opens into a small foyer with a staircase. The second floor has three bedrooms and a bathroom. In each corner of the rooms is the open fireplace with the fireplace surrounds decorated with Greek motifs.

The kitchens, two smokehouse and an oak-lined driveway are original.
