Ferry Tales is an American documentary film by the Hamburg-based director Katja Esson from 2003.
Movie title
The German film title is identical to that of the English original. The name is composed of the English words for ferry ( ferry ) and stories ( tales ). At the same time, it is a play on words with the very similar sounding word fairy tales (English for fairy tales ), with which it is sometimes confused.
action
The film portrays a group of New York women commuters who take the Staten Island Ferry to Manhattan to work every morning . They use the half-hour crossing to get ready for work in the women's toilet on the ferry in front of the mirror. Esson accompanied these women for three months during the morning rush hour on the 8:15 am drive. While doing makeup and hairdressing, they talk about racism in the world of work, husbands, friends, bosses and worries with the children, but also about the latest "ferries gossip ".
Producer Corinna Sager describes the film as "an homage to New York and above all to the normal women who live here".
background
The idea for the film came from Cassis Birgit Staudt, the composer of the soundtrack, who noticed the women on the ferry while filming a music video. After the shooting had already been completed, the filmmakers decided to ask the women about their experiences on that day due to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 and to document them in the film.
After the Oscar nomination, the New York Times featured the film on the cover of the Culture Pages in its New York edition on February 21, 2004. Shortly after the American TV channel bought HBO the rights to the film for 50,000 dollars and thought of the idea to make a series. With a slight delay, the film also became a topic in the feature sections of national newspapers and magazines in Germany.
