The upper mill was a double water mill in Mömbris in the district of Aschaffenburg in Bavaria .

geography

The upper mill was located in the middle Kahlgrund on the left side of the Kahl at the northern end of today's Mühlgasse in Mömbris. The oil mill, called Wenceslas Mill , originally stood on the opposite bank . Below the then Kahlbrücke to Mensengesäß were three weirs that led the Mühlbach to the buildings of the Obermühle. It consisted of the two grain mills Hennesemühle and Gretelsmühle . At the lower mill, the Hellenthalsmühle , about 650 m further downstream , there was an oil mill of almost the same construction.

history

The upper mill was first mentioned in writing in 1715 as the “new mill”. The oldest entry is the name Johann Stäbling as the owner of the mill. In 1737, alongside Stäbling, Johann Wissel was named as the owner of the second mill. It was later acquired by Georg Grünewald, whose son Johann Adam, called Hennes, married the heir to the other part of the mill. The Grünewald family now owned both mills.

In 1780 the opposite oil mill was built and operated by the Grünewald family. At that time there were three undershot water wheels turning side by side. The Obermühle originally had an oil press each . Alois Grünewald, the miller at Gretelsmühle, got caught in the gears in 1948 and was seriously injured.

The mills were shut down in 1977 during the expansion of the 2305 state road , the relocation of the bridge to Mensengesäß and the associated clearing regulation . The course of the river Kahl was relocated to the north, the weirs removed and the Mühlbach filled in. Today the royal wheel and the two millstones in front of the building are still reminiscent of the former upper mill.
