Obermartelingen ( lux . : Uewermaarteleng , French : Haut-Martelange ) is a district of the municipality of Rambruch in western Luxembourg and is known for its disused slate pits . The district lies directly on the border with Belgium ; across the border is the Belgian municipality of Martelange (Martelingen).
Slate industry in Luxembourg
The slate mining in Obermartelingen can be dated back to the time before the French Revolution . With industrialization , the demand for slate increased and the first smaller pits were built , which came into the hands of financially strong German industrialists, the Rother family from Frankfurt , in the middle of the 19th century . The heyday of the Luxembourg slate industry was at the beginning of the 20th century when it employed 600 workers. A narrow-gauge railway , affectionately called Jangeli, was built to transport the slate . Due to competitive pressure from foreign slate and slate substitutes , the last Obermartelinger mine closed in 1986. Today the Uewermaarteleng Slate Museum is located there .
