History of the "Upper Silesian Eichendorff Culture and Meeting Center"

Foundation of the Eichendorff Association

In 1989 an initiative group was set up in Lubowitz that founded the Eichendorff Association . The association, whose judicial registration was only possible after the collapse of the communist regime and the recognition of the existence of the German minority , is in addition to the district associations of the Social-Cultural Society of Germans in Opole Silesia (SKGD) in the Silesian Voivodeship and in Opole, the Nationwide association of German minority associations, Association of German Social-Cultural Societies in Poland (VdG) and the rural community of Rudnik , within whose borders Lubowitz lies, founder of the Eichendorff Center.

Main goals of the Eichendorff Association

Joseph von Eichendorff

According to the statutes, the main objective of the association is to look after objects that are connected to Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff - in particular the castle ruins, the old cemetery, the Lubowitz castle park and the grave of the poet and his wife in Neisse. The association endeavors to maintain Eichendorff's poetry and to collect documents and souvenirs related to Eichendorff. To enable the restoration of Eichendorff's birthplace, the castle in Lubowitz, which was destroyed in 1945, is one of the objectives as well as contributing to the maintenance of German and Upper Silesian culture and the traditions of Silesia. The association was able to put the area around the castle ruins in a handsome condition through volunteer work. The association also acquired adjacent built-up land with a total area of 3½ hectares, which was once owned by the Eichendorff family. The restoration and furnishing of the house were financed by German ministries and the municipality of Rudnik.

In 1999, the Eichendorff Association, as one of the founders, brought the entire complex into the newly established “Upper Silesian Eichendorff Foundation for Culture and Meeting Center”. At the inauguration of the house on July 12, 2000, the Federal Government's representative for emigrants, Jochen Welt MdB (SPD), recalled that "the plan to expand the Eichendorff memorials in Lubowitz was based on the 'Joint Declaration' of November 14, 1989" of the then heads of government Kohl and Mazowiecki ". On the mediation of the Bavarian Ministerialrat Norbert Willisch, the showmaster of Upper Silesian origin, Thomas Gottschalk , was in Lubowitz in July 2000 and donated 50,000 DM to the center. With the restoration of the former school building between the meeting center and In the meantime, the Eichendorffzentrum has also been used as a conference center in the ruins of the castle. In addition to the administration (accounting, management office, seat of the cultural director), there are training rooms in the school annex.

With the establishment of a Scientific Advisory Board in November 2002, the medium-term goal is the establishment of a Scientific Institute. One of the first activities of the Scientific Advisory Board will be the establishment of a publishing house and the publication of a quarterly publication and an academic yearbook, which, in addition to literary topics, also covers other humanities issues, such as: B. the Upper Silesian history and regional studies, should be open.

Castle ruin

The ruins of the Lubowitz Castle

The castle ruins play a major role in the considerations for the further use of the OEKB.

This is in a ruinous state and there is an acute risk of collapse. The ruin began with the destruction in 1945, rain, snow and wind continued to affect the ruin in the following decades, especially since the necessary security work was not carried out. A concept for the construction of the castle is already available in the form of a master's thesis by a student at the Silesian Technical University in Gliwice .
