The Muli-Pfeifhase ( Ochotona muliensis ) is a species of mammal from the family of the Pfeifhasen within the hare-like . Its distribution area is an area in the province of Sichuan in China limited.

features

The Muli-Pfeifhase is a large pika with a body length of 22 centimeters. It is slightly rust-red in color, the back of the ears is maroon to yellow-orange. It differs from Ochotona gloveri , as the subspecies of which it was originally described, only in a few features of the skull, especially the lack of fenestration in the frontal bone .

distribution

Distribution area of the Muli-Pfeifhasen

The mule-pika is endemic to the People's Republic of China . The species is only known from an area in the western part of Sichuan Province . There she lives at altitudes of up to 3600 meters.

Way of life

There is no information about the way of life of this pika. It probably lives similarly to other pigeons in China and feeds on plants in a generalist way. It uses thickets and steppes as a habitat, while the closely related Glover pika ( O. gloveri ) inhabits scree.

Systematics

The Muli-Pfeifhase was assigned as an independent species to the Pfeifhasen (genus Ochotona ) and the subgenus Conothoa , subspecies are not known.

The first scientific description was made by Pen & Feng in 1962, who considered the Muli-Pfeifhase as a subspecies of the Glover-Pfeifhasen ( O. gloveri ). In 1985, however, it was discovered by Feng and Zheng and in 2001 by Niu et al. regarded as an independent species, as it differs from the Glover-Pfeifhasen in several skull features as well as in a different habitat. Andrei Alexandrowitsch Lissowski , however, does not regard it as a separate species in his taxonomic revision of the genus 2013 and in the Handbook of the Mammals of the World and describes it as a synonym and provisional subspecies of the Glover pigeon hare ( Ochotona gloveri ).

Hazard and protection

A risk assessment by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) is not carried out due to the limited amount of data available, the species is accordingly classified in the group "data deficient". Few museum specimens of the species exist and no animals have been observed in the wild for 40 years.
