The ocher-breasted yellowthroat ( Geothlypis speciosa ) is a small songbird from the genus of the yellowthroat ( Geothlypis ) within the wood warbler family (Parulidae). The distribution area is in south-central Mexico . The IUCN has listed them as "endangered" since 2000.

Breasted yellow throats reach a body length of 13 centimeters and weigh 10 to 11.6 grams. The wing length is 5.5 to 6.1 centimeters in the male and 5.2 to 5.7 centimeters in the female. Adult male yellow throats of the nominate form wear a striking black face mask that clearly extends to the sides of the neck and is connected to one another above the crown of the forehead. The crown is blackish with brownish feathers, the back of the head and neck are sooty brown and the upper plumage is brownish-olive. Wings and tail feathers are dull brown with olive feather edges. The underside plumage is golden yellow to ocher with orange to cinnamon brown washed-out flanks and breasts. The beak is black, the legs gray-flesh-colored.

The adult female of the nominate form has duller plumage than the male and lacks the black face mask. The head plumage is dark olive-gray with olive head sides, pale yellow-brown eye ring and superciliar stripes . The upper side plumage is pale olive gray; the underside plumage dull yellow with faded olive-brown flanks and sides of the chest and faded olive-brown belly area. Immature males of the nominate form in the first year resemble adult males. The black face mask is less pronounced and is usually limited to the reins and the lower ear covers on the sides of the head . The crown plumage is brown olive. Juveniles have brown-olive head and upper plumage as well as pale olive-yellow lower plumage. The beak is black; the legs brownish.

The subspecies Geothlypis s. limnatis is very similar to the nominate form. It has a slightly longer beak, a greener upper side plumage without visible brown tones and more olive-washed flanks.

Occurrence, nutrition and reproduction

Breast ocher yellow throats are common in the highlands of south-central Mexico. They inhabit individually or in pairs marshes , river flood plains and lakes with one of reeds and bulrush existing vegetation , and feed mainly on insects , they flush in the lower portions of they inhabit plants. It is incubated from March to June. Nothing more is known about the nesting sites, nest building and breeding behavior.

Hazard status and inventory figures

The IUCN has listed the species as "endangered" since 2000 because of habitat destruction. There is no precise information about the population size. No data has been recorded since 1980. According to the outdated data, the bird protection organization BirdLife International estimates between 2500 and 10,000 individuals.
