Odo J. Struger

Odo Josef Struger (* 1931 in Unterloibl, Ferlach , Carinthia / Austria ; † December 8, 1998 in Cleveland / Ohio ) was an engineer and inventor who played a key role in the development of the first programmable logic controllers (PLC).

Life

Struger moved from Austria to the United States in the 1950s . In his job he became a pioneer in industrial electronics when he worked for the US company Allen-Bradley from 1958 to 1997 , which later became part of Rockwell Automation . He was said to be the "father" of Allen-Bradley's Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) (= PLC). Struger had about 50 inventions in his life span.

At the same time as him, Richard E. Morley (Modicon) developed one of the first PLC devices.

Struger received his doctorate in 1970 from the Technical University of Vienna .

Honors

Struger was an honorary citizen of Ferlach. He received the Prometheus Award in the USA in 1996 . The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Illinois inducted him into the Hall of Fame for Automation.
