The Borrani family moved from Pisa to Florence in 1840, where Odoardo studied from 1853 at the Academy of Fine Arts under Gaetano Bianchi , Giuseppe Bezzuoli and Enrico Pollastrini . His first pictures were part of academic history painting . Borrani was awarded a gold medal for one of these works. Together with Telemaco Signorini , he voluntarily entered the Second War of Independence for the independence of Italy in 1859 . Borrani devoted himself more and more to realistic genre painting . With other painters of the realistic disposition he met with the Macchiaioli group around the Caffè Michelangiolo.

In the same year he spent the summer in Castiglioncello for the first time as a guest of the critic Diego Martelli. In 1875, Borrani founded Silvestro Lega, a gallery of young artists that did not last long. Borrani taught at the Florentine Academy. In later years he earned his living painting ceramics for the porcelain factory in Doccia and supplying graphics for L'Illustrazione Italiana .
