Odontoscion Dentex ( Engl. Reef croaker - Reef croaker ) is a kind from the family of the croakers (Sciaenidae), the off the southern coast of Florida , the Caribbean and the Atlantic coast of Costa Rica to northwestern Brazil occurs. It is missing around the Bahamas . It is of little importance for fishing, larger specimens are freshly marketed.

features

Odontoscion dentex is a small fish with an average length of about 20 and a maximum of 30 cm with an elongated, laterally flattened body. The animals are silvery-gray with a slight shade of brown and black spots on the large scales. These are cycloid on the body and gill cover , ctenoid on the head, the preoperculum and around the eyes . The large mouth is slightly drooping, terminal to slightly below and contains sharp teeth that are far apart. In the front of the upper jaw there are two slightly enlarged fangs. There are eight pores on the snout and four more on the beardless chin. The preoperculum is entire, the inside of the gill cover dark. The gill trap has 19 to 25 well-defined thorns. There is a large black spot at the base of the pectoral fins . The front part of the dorsal fin has 11 or twelve hard rays, the rear one hard and 23 to 26 soft rays. Of the two hard rays of the anal fin , the rear one reaches about three quarters of the length of the first of the 8 or 9, rarely 10 soft rays. The swim bladder is two-chambered, with the front chamber yoke and the rear carrot-shaped .

Way of life

The animals live individually or in groups in shallow water on reefs and over sandy bottoms. They are predominantly nocturnal and relatively shy. Crustaceans, small fish and their larvae serve as food. The animals can use their swim bladders to make dull, knocking and, more rarely, croaking noises.
