The Oeventroper Ruhrtalgrund is a small-scale natural subunit with the order number 334.11 of the Oeventroper Ruhrtal (334.1) within the North Sauerland Oberland (334). According to the handbook of the natural spatial structure of Germany, it comprises the bottom of the breakthrough valley of the middle Ruhr between the Mesched district of Freienohl and the Arnsberg town center, which is framed in the south by the Rumbeck slopes (334.10) and in the north by the Glösingen-Enster slopes (334.12) . The natural area is named after the Arnsberg district of Oeventrop , which is located in the valley alongside the other districts of Uentrop and Rumbeck .

The valley floor is about 200  m above sea level. NN and has meadows of different widths in the course. Gentle sliding slopes alternate with loess loam-covered river terraces , which were formed by the strongly meandering Ruhr. Striking is the location in the Arnsberg central place at the end of the natural environment narrow double loop of the clock which in the made of hard Kiesel shales and - kalken the Kulm facies existing Arnsberg caliper is cut. This double loop is also called the Arnsberger Ruhr Valley Arch. Antimony ores were mined in the rock at Gut Wintrop in the Caspari colliery until 1890 .

At the narrowest point, a resistant terrace spur, called the Arnsberger Riegel , blocks the course of the river. On the terrace spur, which is crossed by the Upper Ruhr Valley Railway by means of the 277 m long Schlossberg tunnel, lies the upper town of Arnsberg with the Arnsberg Castle . In winter, on windless days and on cool nights, the terrace spur prevents the outflow of cold air that flows from the slopes into the valley. Nevertheless, the wind-protected valley floor has a mild climate with an annual mean temperature of around 8 ° C. Oak and hornbeam forests thrive on the lower slopes facing the sun .
