2009 Argentine Open Polo Championship

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 116th Argentine Open Polo Championships took place from November 14th, 2009 to December 12th, 2009 in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . Six teams were seeded due to their successes in the past, in addition two other teams (Alegría and El Paraíso) were allowed to participate after their own qualifying tournament before the Argentine Championships.

The tournament ended with a historic final of two 40-goal teams, which showed two very strong teams and, as has often happened, was only decided in extra time by Mariano Aguerre's so-called “golden goal” for La Dolfina . La Dolfina won his fifth title at the Argentine Open and again (after 2005) destroyed Ellerstina's hopes of winning the "Triple Corona" (winning the Tortugas Open , Hurlingham Open and Argentine Open in one year).

The final went as follows: La Dolfina: 2-2, 3-5, 7-7, 10-10, 11-12, 13-13, 14-15, 16-16 and 17-16.

The “Lady Susan Townley Cup” for the best horse of the tournament went to Adolfo Cambiaso for Dolfina Cuartetera . Pablo Mac Donough was named the best player in the finals, while Adolfo Cambiaso was the tournament's top scorer.
